The past month has been incredibly busy for Troop 226. The Scouts planned for yet another campout this time at the newest Scout Camp in our Council, Camp Bashor at Otay Lakes Regional Park. Camp Bashor offers a variety of activities including Family Adventure Camp, Archery, Zip Line, a Climbing Wall and even an opportunity to rock climb and rappel on nearby rocks. Troop 226 Scouts took this opportunity to work toward earning the climbing merit badge. This merit badge requires classroom work as well as demonstrating specific skills on a climb. At our regular Scout meeting prior to the campout, adults from Troop 226 explained the classroom work for climbing. Scouts learned about first aid, safety, use of equipment and climber communication.
On Saturday it was time to put their newly learned skills to the test. After a full night of sleep each Scout crawled out of their sleeping bags and tents early in the morning ready for a day of climbing. The Scouts took a hike from the campground to the rocks for the adventure. Many were nervous but after climbing and rappelling they had pretty much faced their fears. The Scouts hiked back after many hours of climbing. That evening they enjoyed a nutritious Scout-prepared dinner followed by a campfire, flames burning high into the sky. Crawling back into their tents after the campfire each Scout fell asleep.
On Sunday morning everyone busied themselves with packing up their gear ready to head home after an eventful day of climbing on Saturday.
