This June was an unforgettable month for Troop 226, with fun and challenging adventures with friends from other troops. Troop 226 Girls, joined by Scouts from Troop 682 (San Diego) and Crew 119 (Tennessee), completed one of Scouting America’s premier high-adventure experiences—a seven-night Northern Tier expedition through the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota. During the trek, the crew paddled approximately 45 miles and completed 27 portages (carrying canoes and gear between lakes) while traveling through one of North America’s largest and most spectacular wilderness canoe areas.
Northern Tier is renowned for challenging Scouts both physically and mentally while developing leadership skills, teamwork, resilience, and self-reliance. The crew navigated remote lakes, camped in the backcountry, prepared all of their own meals, and carried heavy packs and canoes over rugged portage trails. Each day required careful planning, perseverance, adaptability, and cooperation as the scouts faced changing weather and the grueling conditions of the wilderness.
Along the way, the crew experienced the area’s remarkable wildlife. They spotted loons, encountered a grouse hen with her chicks, discovered fresh wolf footprints around one of their tents, and visited campsites filled with beautiful butterflies. In addition to the adventure, the Scouts participated in the Northern Tier Lake Monitoring Award program. By collecting water quality data from remote wilderness lakes, they contributed to ongoing scientific research that helps monitor the health of Minnesota’s lakes while gaining firsthand experience in environmental stewardship and conservation.
The expedition provided countless opportunities for leadership growth, problem-solving, and personal development. From navigating unfamiliar waterways to encouraging fellow scouts during long portages, the crew demonstrated the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law every day. They returned home with unforgettable memories, fortified friendships, greater confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty, challenge, and solitude of the Boundary Waters.
