Get to know Troop 226

What do we do?

Troop 226 is a Scouts BSA troop based in Scripps Ranch, San Diego California to support young women in achieving and growing their goals via the values and methods of Scouting. Scouting has been called a “game with a purpose.”  Youth and families join Scouts to go on adventures and form good friendships with good people.  In a nutshell –  have fun!

Our Troop achieves the Aims of Scouting by prioritizing and practicing the eight methods of Scouting—in no particular order since they’re all important.

Ideals

Scouting has found that the best way to invest in young people and enable them to be their best is by practicing the values in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan. Troop 226 Scouts remind each other of these at the beginning of each weekly meeting and use them as the basis for every skill and activity.

Patrols

The patrol method is a system for troop organization that enables the Troop to be youth-lead. Scouts in the troop elect their peers to every role and work in small groups that grow together as they progress through the skills of the program. Troop 226 pairs experienced Scouts with newer Scouts joining and holds regular elections to allow Scouts to grow their leadership skills and be an active part in supporting their troop.

Advancement

The Scouting program has a rank advancement component that helps Scouts progress through set skills and be part of the planning of their own development, growing their confidence, self-reliance, and their ability to help others progress too. Troop 226’s patrols help each other to progress and each patrol has adult leadership paired with them to teach and facilitate the skills.

Outdoor programs

Practicing the Scouting program via outdoor adventures gives purpose to the skills and activities the Scouts learn in meetings and through advancement, helping to translate these lessons to immediate practice. Being in the outdoors and familiar with nature also helps Scouts to stay close to the values of stewardship and conservation that are core parts of the program.

Association with adults

Scout leaders are both role models and active participants in Scouts’ growth. Scouting provides a place where adult leaders like the Scoutmaster (the lead adult for the troop), assistant Scoutmasters, and committee members (adult leaders who support the troop’s day-to-day needs and long-term planning) listen to youth, focus on and support their goals, and act as counterparts to their leadership roles. Taking this sincere interest in each of our Scouts can teach them how they should expect to treat others and be treated in all working and mentoring relationships going forward.

Personal growth

Scouts being the lead on planning and facilitating all their own activities, advancements, and training allows them room for personal growth. The Scouting program also focuses this growth on service to others with the concept of Do a Good Turn Daily. Scouts decide what is important to them and work with their peers and gather support from adult leaders to make it happen.

Leadership development

Also one of the program’s aims—the Scouting program encourages Scouts to learn and practice leadership skills in troop settings and in the wider Scouting community. Every Scout has the opportunity to participate in both shared and total leadership situations. Understanding the concepts of leadership and becoming a servant leader helps a Scout accept the leadership role of others and guides them towards participating citizenship and character development.

Uniform

Uniforms make Scouts a visible force for good and create a positive image in their communities. The uniform gives a Scout identity in a global community of young people who believe in the same ideals. The uniform is practical attire for  Scout activities and provides a way for Scouts to show what they have accomplished and creates connections by highlighting parts of the program that are important to them.

Leadership

Troop 226 is a youth-lead troop—our Patrol Leader’s Council, lead by our Senior Patrol Leader, is a group of Scouts who are elected and each have a specific role to support the troop. Working with the adults who volunteer as Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, and committee members, these Scouts plan the troop’s calendar, make decisions for the unit, and help guide all the scouts to success in each of their activities.
