Newsletter – Feb 2025

During the past two months, Troop 226 has been extremely busy. There are many adventures and events we attended, made possible by our wonderful scouts. Some of these include training for Philmont (New Mexico), Joshua Tree climbing, and a bake sale!

Philmont is a High Adventure backpacking outing, our crew is going for 12 days in the summer of 2026. This requires training which starts 1 ½ years in advance. We began our training by hiking up Mount Volcan in February. The weather there is notorious for being very cold and wet this time of year, but for us, it was a nice sunny day with a cool breeze. Then our crew went to Torrey Pines in March and found ourselves with great weather once again. We cannot wait until we get to go next summer!

This month, we also held a bake sale at MCAS Miramar. We had a variety of foods including cookies, brownies, mochis, and even pumpkin bread! The money raised is used to help our scouts pay off the expenses of the fun things we do like summer camp, Philmont, and Iceland.

Lastly, our troop went to Joshua tree! We stayed in the Indian Cove campground and climbed the local routes. Each year, we go to Joshua Tree and complete the climbing merit badge and work other climbing patches. J. Tree is one of our favorite places to go!

These beginning activities were a fun start to the year and great learning experiences for some of our new scouts. Marielle, one of our troop’s experienced members, earned her Eagle Rank. Eagle is the highest rank in scouting and takes much effort in obtaining it. To reach this rank, it takes years of work where you need to earn at least 21 required merit badges and complete an eagle project. Only about 2% of all scouts reach this goal, showing how much of an achievement this is.
